I was thinking today
About poetry and modern culture
And a bit about song lyrics too.
I thought, there’s a lot of ironic
Stuff out there. Isn’t there?
It’s the popular way
To say what you want to say
The importance of not being earnest
But of being trivial
And lackadaisical
Is more central than it has ever been.
Here are some examples
“I bet that you look good on the dancefloor
Dancing to electro-pop like a robot from 1984
Oh there int no love no, Montague’s or Capulets
Just banging tunes in DJ sets and
Dirty dancefloors and dreams of naughtiness”
And another
"See I reckon you're about an 8 or a 9,
Maybe even 9 and a half in four beers time.
That blue top shop top you've got on IS nice,
Bit too much fake tan though - but yeah you score high"
Its sort of like the new cool is the acceptance and reverence of the trivial.
Like higher things can be accessed this way so its fine.
I don’t know though it seems a bit self indulgent,
Like we’re letting ourselves off for the empty things
We get up to.
